Nelumbo ‘Mrs. Perry D. Slocum’ is among the most popular and best-selling lotus in
North America. This eye-catching plant honors the wife of noted hybridizer Perry D. Slocum. Perry Slocum died in 2004, leaving behind a huge collection of lotus and water lilies.
‘Mrs. Perry D. Slocum’ is the result of a cross between the native American lotus, N. lutea, and N. ‘Rosea Plena.’ Eight crosses were performed and only two seeds formed. One produced a weak seedling, while the other produced the vigorous plant that soon became a favorite among water gardeners.
‘Mrs. Perry D. Slocum’ has flowers reaching 8-10 inches in diameter. Flowers last five to six days and gradually change color to become mostly yellow with pink tips. It is hardy to USDA Hardiness Zone 4.
This lotus will flower in a tub or barrel garden, but performs best in a medium to large pool.
