Gardening participation remains steady, sales decline in 2006 survey
Tuesday, 24 July 2007
Household participation in lawn and garden activities in 2006 equals the five-year average, according to the latest National Gardening Survey released by the National Gardening Association.
An estimated 85 million households participated in one or more types of do-it-yourself lawn and garden activities last year. That was equal to the average participation seen over the last five years. Lawn and garden activities posted record gains in 2005, with 91 million households participating. Figures from 2006 show participation dropped closer to averages seen in the past.
Lawn and garden retail sales declined 3 percent to $34.077 billion in 2006. Home centers and mass merchandisers grabbed most of the gardening dollars. An estimated 41 million households made purchases at home centers, followed by 34 million who chose mass merchants. Garden centers came in third with 31 million households purchasing.
U.S. households spent an average of $401 on their lawn and gardens in 2006, 3 percent more than the $387 spent in 2005.
