Consumers are entertaining outdoors more than ever, according to a report from research company NPD Group. Eight in 10 survey respondents said they prefer outdoor entertaining over indoor, weather permitting.

According to the survey, 23 percent of homeowners reported owning a fire pit or outdoor fireplace, and another 14 percent plan to purchase one. Nearly one-third reported owning or planning to buy a gazebo or canopy. Another 14 percent either own or plan to buy an outdoor refrigerator.

NPD also asked consumers to rate retailers’ selection of outdoor entertaining products. The majority rated them good to fair.

“This may indicate retailers’ product selection is not entirely what they’re looking for and spells opportunity for retailers and manufacturers,” said Mark Delaney, NPD director, home improvement.

Delaney advised retailers to stock more high-quality trendy items and re-examine how quickly summer items are pushed out of stores.

“It seems by Fourth of July most stores are clearing out their inventory and selection is limited, thereby frustrating the consumer,” he said. “Keeping their [retailers’] shelves well-stocked even after the Fourth of July weekend is crucial if they want to maximize on their return.”
