Holiday Tree Farms Inc. of Corvallis, Ore., and Yule Tree Farms of Canby, Ore., have formed the Coalition of Environmentally Conscious Growers. The group will promote the importance of live trees and sound growing practices.

The coalition also introduced a grower certification program that will be audited by an independent party. The program will evaluate growers on erosion control/soil conservation, integrated pest management and tributary protection.

“Part of being an environmentally conscious grower is accepting the responsibility of spreading knowledge of sustainable growing practices with other growers in the industry throughout the country,” said Joe Sharp, president of Yule Tree Farms.

John Schudel, co-owner of Holiday Tree Farms, said the coalition will educate the public that trees are grown on a farm like any other crop. “It’s important to dispel the myth that Christmas trees de-forest America,” he said.

Yule Tree Farms and Holiday Tree Farms produce 20 percent of all Christmas trees grown in Oregon, the country’s largest source of Christmas trees.
