I, like just about all nursery operators, am concerned. What implications will the Department of Homeland Security’s new rules concerning Social Security Number mismatch letters have?
I have a pretty good idea, but I’m not sure the government does.
* What can we expect to happen when we terminate an old-time employee because he can’t correct his SSN information?
* Will our government collect the terminated individual and return him to his native country?
* Or will he stay in the
United States where he can show the next employer the same documents to get a job?
* Or does the government expect this individual to go deeper underground, earning less money and not paying into the system?
* Concerning employees whom we garnish for child support, has the government considered that these dollars will stop going to the mothers and children?
* Has the government considered that if my nursery employs 10 or 12 fewer field workers, I’ll need two or three fewer employees who earn $70,000 or more?
Let’s inform the government of these problems and what they could mean to the economy. Let’s ask what they intend to do with the employees we terminate. The fired workers aren’t just going to say, “Oh gee, let’s go back home.”
In many cases they have been here so long they have no home or family to return to.
