Immigration reform. American Nursery & Landscape Association was among a group of nearly 400 agricultural and green-industry associations and leaders who sent a letter to Congress urging legislative action on agricultural immigration reform during the post-election session of Congress.
H-2B visa cap. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced it had received a sufficient number of petitions to reach the congressionally mandated 33,000 H-2B visa cap for the first six months of fiscal year 2007. Petitions for H-2B workers who enter after April 1 will continue to be processed until a “final receipt date” is announced. “Reaching the semiannual cap of 33,000 in November underscores the need for a permanent solution to the H-2B cap,” said John Farner, ANLA director of legislative relations.
Wal-Mart ban. The San Diego City Council voted to ban certain giant retail stores. The 5-3 vote prohibits “stores of more than 90,000 square feet that use 10 percent of space to sell groceries and other merchandise that is not subject to sales tax.” The council’s decision was seen as at least a temporary blow to Wal-Mart, which had plans to expand in the city.
